Sweeney’s Stuttering Update – December 2023

Good afternoon everyone,

I hope you’re all having a cracking start to the weekend 🙂

As December 2023 begins to come to an end, it’s time for this month’s Sweeney’s Stuttering Update. I like to do these updates as a monthly log of my journey to speech fluency, bringing you along on the ride with me. Let’s take a look at how my speech has been doing over the last month or so.

Hello and Welcome to Sweeney’s Blogs!

We’re at the final Sweeney’s Stuttering Update of the year, can you believe it?!

2023 has gone by so quickly, but that’s not to say that a load hasn’t happened throughout the course of this year. I’m going to leave my year-long summary of my journey to speech fluency through 2023 for a different blog, but it will be coming soon, don’t you worry. Today’s blog is going to be more focused on how my stutter has been doing over the last couple of weeks, so, without further ado, let’s get into it 🙂

I’ve found that throughout December, my speech has been a little unpredictable. The passing of my grandfather more or less out of the blue, of course, had a major impact on my control levels, and with that came a slight increase in the frequency of the amount that I stuttered while speaking. This, while not ideal, is highly normal, and is something that I anticipated, and have put in measure to hopefully start to regain that consistent balance again over my overall fluency.

Personally, I have found that I typically stutter a lot when I am under intense emotions, regardless of whether they are positive or negative. With the festive season comes the ideal time for celebration, for everything to come together and catch up, remembering those who cannot be with us, celebrating those who are and preparing for whatever the new year has in store for us all.

This year has been particularly different for me, entering into Christmas without my Grampa, Nana and Cap. I’ll admit, it hasn’t been easy, but I feel like I have done a marvellous job of keeping it all together. I always knew that this year’s festivities were going to be a tough one, and I’m proud that I have managed to make it through, and have managed to keep a relatively strong hold over the control of my speech.

While my speech has been a little shaky at times, on the whole, I have seen a major improvement going through December, and my ability to bounce back from setbacks is growing stronger with each passing day. It’s a testament to the progress that I have made on my journey to speech fluency, and even though I still have a way left to go yet, I’m confident that I’ll get there, you mark my words.

That’s all for today’s blog, what do you think? Do you enjoy seeing these monthly stuttering updates? Are you looking forward to seeing the full-year summary?

Be sure to let me know your thoughts and answers to the above questions, either in the comments below or through our Facebook page!

Thanks for reading & I hope you have a lovely day!
