Good morning everyone,
Hope you’re having a wonderful start to the week 🙂
I started reading “The Inheritance Games” series of books at the start of this year and I could not put them down! We’ll be taking a look at some of my thoughts on the series, and why you should give them a go, in today’s blog. So, without further ado, let’s get into it.
Hello and Welcome to Sweeney’s Blogs!
Last year, I blasted through “The Naturals”, which was one of the first series that Jennifer Lynn Barnes wrote and I instantly clicked with the writing style, character development and the different techniques that she used tp keep readers engaged throughout the book.

I might do a future blog on “The Naturals”, but to summarise the plot quickly, it’s focused on a group of extremely gifted teenagers, who work with the FBI to help them catch serial killers and solve what used to be ‘unsolable’ cases. When I saw that Barnes had started to write another series of books, I instantly thought “I’ve got to give these a go”, which is exactly what I did!
Here’s the blurb to the book, in case you’ve never heard of it:
“A Billion-Dollar Fortune To Die For.
Avery has a plan: keep her head down, work hard for a better future. Then an eccentric billionaire dies, leaving her almost his entire fortune. And no one, least of all Avery, knows why.
A Deadly Game.
Now she must move into the mansion she’s inherited.
It’s filled with secrets and codes, and the old man’s surviving relatives –
a family hell-bent on discovering why Avery got ‘their’ money.
The Winner Takes All.
Soon she is caught in a deadly game that everyone in this strange family is playing.
But just how far will they go to keep their fortune?”
I mean if that blurb alone does not make you want to dive straight into the series, I honestly do not know what will. The books are right up my street, I love this kind of setting, puzzles and hidden family secrets – it makes the books so much more immersive and engaging in my opinion.

The Inheritance Games is a rollercoaster ride of mystery, intrigue, and unexpected twists that will keep you guessing until the very end of the book. At the heart of the story is Avery Grambs, a seemingly ordinary girl whose life takes an enormous turn when she unexpectedly inherits the fortune of billionaire Tobias Hawthorne, whom she believes she has never met before.
As Avery navigates the complexities of her newfound wealth, she is thrust into a high-stakes game of riddles, puzzles, and family secrets that challenge everything she thought she knew about herself and the enigmatic Hawthorne family. Moving through the book, it feels as if you are right next to Avery, following the adventure as if you were a part of it yourself.

My personal favourite thing about the book is just how unique each character is and the journeys that they go on, both throughout the first book and the rest of the series. Whether it’s Avery, one of the four Hawthorne Grabdons (Nash, Grayson, Xander and Jameson), John Oren (Avery’s bodyguard), the Laughlins or someone else entirely, they all have their own personalities, pasts and future adventures go on.
While Barnes makes Avery a very connectable and likeable character, she still makes a load of mistakes over the course of the books. Some of them you can fully understand and agree with, others not so much. What’s important is that she makes the mistakes, but is then held accountable for it and takes steps to learn and overcome them. You really get to experience her overall character progression, which is great to see in my opinion.

I cannot wait to read through the next book and see where Barnes takes the series in going forward – it’s going to be so good! If it’s jot clear from this review, I would 100% recommend giving The Inheritance Games a read, they are awesome!
That’s all for today’s blog, what do you think? Have you heard of The Inheritance Games books before? Have you read any good books lately? What’s your favourite genre to read?
I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Thanks for reading and I hope you have a lovely day!
