What happened on the 23rd of August in History?

Well, I had some of those thoughts today, so I decided to do a bit of digging to find out what happened on the 23rd of August throughout history. Are you interested in what I found out? Okay, let’s take a closer look at this in today’s blog!

Today is Monday the 23rd of August 2021, one of the thousands of August 23rd’s throughout history. Do you ever wonder what happened on this day over the years? As it happens, quite a lot happened on this day, from famous births to a famous execution, the end of a famous Ottoman battle & so much more!

Famous Births

August the 23rd has seen countless famous birthdays over the years. Some of these famous faces include:

American actor, dancer, singer & filmmaker Gene Kelly, who was born on August 23rd 1912

Baron Georges Cuvier, who is commonly referred to as the “founding father of Palaeontology”, was born on 23rd August 1769

Professional Basketball legend Kobe Bryant, who was born on August 23rd 1978

Famous Execution

August 23rd 1305 is a date that will be remembered throughout history, as the day that the Scottish Rebel William Wallace was executed in London for treason. Wallace’s story is renowned throughout the ages, with one of the most famous portrayals being by Mel Gibson in Braveheart. Braveheart paved the way for the famous Freedom Speech, which can be seen below:

The Victory of the Ottomans

On the 23rd of August 1514, the Ottomans defeated the Safavids of Iran at the Battle of Chāldirān. The rise of the Ottoman Empire is such an interesting topic, with their empire existing for over 200 years, I always love learning more about it! So, there we have it! Those were some of the coolest things that I found had happened throughout history on the 23rd of August.
