Sweeney’s Stuttering Update – January 2022

I hope you’ve all had a great start to the weekend!!

January 2022 has nearly come to a close already, and with that comes time for this month’s Sweeney’s Stuttering Update!! I do these updates once a month, to help everyone follow along my journey to speech fluency!

Hello & Welcome to Sweeney’s Blogs!

2022 is now well underway, and with a new year comes time for some fresh stuttering goals. My speech has come a really long way over the last couple of years, and I think it could be really good for me to have some goals to work towards for the next 12 months or so 🙂

One of the main things that I am going to work on this year is going to be learning to have a more positive outlook on my own voice. I feel like when it comes to my stutter, I am a lot more critical of myself than I should be. It’s almost as if I expect people to pick me up on each & every stutter when in reality, that’s rarely ever the case.

Something which has only really dawned on me recently is that I am probably so critical about my own speech because of my own expectations – I know that I fully have the capability to speak more or less fluently, so when I do stutter, I am a lot more critical to myself than I need to be. This is obviously something that will take a little while to adapt, but I feel like I can do this over 2022 no problem.

If I’m honest, I think being over critical of your speech is probably a common trait among most stutterers. I feel like, over time, we start to develop this expectation of what we’re capable of, and then when things don’t go according to plan, it can have quite damaging effects on both our speech and on our general confidence.

Don’t you worry though, I’m going to do all that I can to help other stutterers & continue along my journey to speech fluency 🙂

2022 is going to be a fantastic year, I’ve got a good feeling 😉
