Let’s talk about Ethical Perspectives

Good afternoon everyone,

I hope that you’re keeping well!

Your Ethical Perspective/Standpoint plays a key role in how you see the world around you – in today’s blog, we are going to be taking a look at Ethical Perspectives, what they mean, and how they can influence your life.

Hello & Welcome to Sweeney’s Blogs!

Ethics, Morality & Philosophy have been 3 fields that I’ve been really interested in over the last couple of years – I feel like they open up a deeper way of understanding how we as people operate, communicate, socialise & so much more. I have been curious to start writing some blogs on the topics but wasn’t too sure where to start, so I got to thinking…

If I was going to start talking about ethics & morality, I would first need to introduce some of the concepts & terms used in the field. For today’s blog, we are going to start out by covering what we mean by an ‘ethical perspective’, sometimes referred to as an ‘ethical standpoint’.

Your ethical perspective refers to the way in which you see life, people & the world around you. It’s what helps you to differentiate the good from the bad, what you believe is the right thing to do & so much more. In order words, your ethical perspective is the viewpoint that you use to view the world from 🙂

As I’m sure you can imagine, our ethical standpoints are something that develop & grow as we go through life – they are in a constant state of evolution, evolving in tandem with us as people. Our ethical standpoints can be influenced by a whole suite of different factors, such as our background, our education, our family life, the list does well & truly go on.

What I find to be really fascinating is how each person has their own ethical perspective, we all have our own way of viewing the world around us. For some people, religion plays a key role in their ethical perspective, with their belief over what is right or wrong closely aligning with the church & its teachings, however, for other people, their viewpoints may be influenced by something entirely different.

Taking all of this into account, we can see that there are over 7 billion different ethical perspectives in the world – while there may be a lot of similarities between people, I do honestly believe that each of us has our own unique lens to view the world through. This enormous number of different perspectives & opinions opens the doorway to countless possibilities & opportunities for the world around us.

If you take a look at the business world, for example, think about how many fantastic inventions have been created by people & organisations in the last 30 years alone, it really is astounding. While at the surface level, you may not think that ethical perspectives play a big role in this, I really do think that they do – our ethical perspectives shape the lens that we view life, so in a way, they govern the large majority of what we do, in some shape or form.

With all of this in mind, it is no surprise that philosophers & psychologists are so intrigued by the workings of our minds & the wider world around us. Over the last couple of hundred years, philosophers from all across the world have attempted to come up with theories & systems to try and explain the ever-evolving & changing entity that is the human mind.

We are going to leave the theories & different methodologies for another day, but most of them really do get you thinking about your perspective on life. Philosophy, ethics & morality are all really thought-provoking fields, but what I have found is that they can be quite confusing to get your head around at first glance. That’s why, when I talk about the different topics here on this page, I’ll do my best to discuss & explain things as plainly as I can, so you’ll be able to understand them whether you have prior knowledge or otherwise 🙂

So, that’s all for today’s blog on ethical perspectives, what do you think? Would you like to see more blogs on ethics, morality & philosophy here on the page? Are there any topics that you would like to see me cover?

Be sure to let me know your thoughts & answers to the above questions, either in the comments below or through our Facebook page!

Thanks for reading & I hope you have a lovely day!
