What is Sisu?

Over the last couple of months, we’ve delved into some of the different wellness concepts from across the globe. I love seeing how different cultures interpret the lessons we need to live a healthy life, so with this in mind, we’ll be exploring the Finnish concept of “Sisu” in today’s blog.

Hello and Welcome to Sweeney’s Blogs!

Sisu is a Finnish term that roughly translates to English as “strength of will,” “perseverance,” “grit,” or “resilience.” It’s a concept deeply embedded in Finnish culture and reflects a mindset of stoic determination in the face of adversity.

Sisu is focused on having the courage and tenacity to continue moving forward despite the obstacles, setbacks, or challenges that life may have in store for you, or those around you. If the last couple of years have taught us anything, it’s that we don’t know what the future has in store for us, however, that doesn’t mean that we have to go into each day feeling scared or uncertain about what the day will bring.

It’s a concept highly associated with bravery, resilience, tenacity and determination. It’s about heading into each day with a positive mindset, with the knowledge that while problems may arise, you can and will be able to resolve them and continue growing on your journey through life.

Rather than avoiding or fearing adversity, sisu encourages individuals to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and self-improvement. Whether the challenge goes our way or otherwise, there is nearly always a lesson that we can take from the experience. As people, we exist amidst a flux of constant development – each person, opportunity or day that we face brings new thoughts, sensations and teachings that help shape us into the people we are today.

While sisu often emphasises individual strength and resilience, it also acknowledges the importance of community and support networks. We are social beings by nature, and it is through supporting each other as we progress through life’s many twists and turns that help create the strongest and most genuine bonds we have across our relationships.

So there we have it, there is a brief introduction to the Finnish concept of sisu! Let’s keep this in mind as we enter into a new week, with the knowledge that while challenges may arise, they will all help us to grow and reach our full potential.
