Performance vs Growth Mindset

Good morning everyone,

I hope you’re all keeping well 🙂

I am fascinated by people – how we think, feel and react to different circumstances never fails to amaze me. With this in mind, I wanted to start exploring different mindsets and perspectives that shape us into who we are today. We’re going to start with taking a look at two very different mindsets in today’s blog.

Hello and Welcome to Sweeney’s Blogs!

In our lives, our mindset shapes the way we approach challenges, setbacks, and opportunities. Two very popular and powerful mindsets often come into play, which are known as a performance mindset and a growth mindset.

Performance Mindset – Focuses on proving your abilities. It’s when people are more focused on outcomes, and being seen as competent. People with this mindset are driven by results but often fear failure because it threatens their sense of self-worth.

People with this mindset set clear, measurable, and achievable goals, holding themselves accountable to ensure these goals are completed. I feel like this approach can be quite a bit more stressful, with people putting pressure on themselves to reach certain targets or to be the person they feel they need to be.

Growth Mindset – Embraces the idea that abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort, learning, and persistence. People with this mindset are less concerned with proving themselves and more focused on the process of growth itself.

They understand that setbacks are not failures and valuable lessons help them improve. They’re more open to challenges, take constructive criticism in stride, and are constantly seeking ways to evolve.

Both mindsets can influence how we approach work, relationships, and personal growth. There is no right or wrong answer for which mindset is the best one to have, it’s all about what works well for you as a person. This choice can change as we move through our lives, depending on the situations and lessons we face along the way.

Personally, I prefer a growth mindset, it’s something that I have worked a lot on developing over the last couple of years. While I feel like a performance mindset can be very useful for some scenarios, on the whole, a growth mindset seems like the best fit for who I am today, as well as who I want to be moving forward.

So, the question is, which mindset are you creating in your life?

Which mindset will you choose today?

I’d love to hear your thoughts  ⤵️

Thanks for reading and I hope you have a lovely day!
