Alzheimer’s – We can all make a difference

Good morning,

I hope everything is going well with you lately 🙂

September is coming to a close, and with it, this year’s World Alzheimer’s Month.

Throughout the past few weeks, I’ve shared stories of my Nana, reflections on music and memory, and thoughts on how we can all raise awareness for Alzheimer’s and dementia. As this month comes to an end, it’s so important that we keep these conversations going, which is exactly what we’ll take a look at in today’s blog.

Hello and Welcome to Sweeney’s Blogs!

This month always carries a special meaning for me. My Nana was my best friend, and losing her to Alzheimer’s in January 2023 changed my life in ways I’m still learning to understand.

Sharing these posts has been my way of keeping her memory alive while hopefully offering comfort, understanding, and a little education for others.

From dancing in a field to Tell Me That You Love Me, to the small but powerful moments of storytelling during her care home visits, each memory has reminded me that love or one’s legacy isn’t dependent on perfect recall.

Content like this isn’t easy to create and share publicly with you all; however, what it does do is reinforce the message of – even when memory fades, connection remains.

Alzheimer’s and dementia affect millions of families worldwide, often in ways we don’t talk about enough.

By sharing our experiences, whether it’s a single memory, a song, or a metaphor that helps explain the disease, we shine a light on what it means to live with and care for someone with Alzheimer’s.

We can all make a difference, whether that is by: carrying on the conversation, continuing to learn more about supporting people experiencing Alzheimer’s or Dementia or even checking in with people where you can – it all adds up and helps shape a positive impact in their lives.

Thank you all for following along with me on this series throughout September. It’s been a great one to put together. I’m hoping to do more themed content like this moving forward. Be sure to let me know if there is anything you would like to see me cover next.

Thanks a lot for reading and I hope you have a lovely day!

James
