What is Fika?

Good afternoon everyone,

I hope you’re all keeping well 🙂

Countries from all across the globe have their own wellness techniques and rituals that help you to live your best possible life. Sweden has a vast selection of these, and in today’s blog, we’re going to be taking a look at what is meant by the Swedish concept of fika.

Hello and Welcome to Sweeney’s Blogs!

Fika is a concept, a state of mind, an attitude and an important part of Swedish culture, which refers to making time where you can for friends and colleagues to share a cup of tea (or any drink for that matter) and a little something to eat. Many Swedes consider it essential to make time for fika every day, to reap the benefits that it can bring to your life.

Swedes place great significance on setting aside time for social interaction during their day. They firmly believe that engaging in a brief fika break not only provides a moment to pause and unwind but also helps strengthen their interpersonal relationships with others. This practice allows both the body the time needed to rejuvenate and for relationships to flourish.

What you eat or drink largely doesn’t matter, it is the act of sparing a little time to socialise with one another that is the most important part. Some people use fika to discuss problems that they are facing in their work or professional lives, some use it to catch up with friends or co-workers, while others use it for entirely different reasons.

Taking the time to take a step back, pause and evaluate things from a neutral perspective can make an incredible difference to somebody’s day. Given our inherently social nature as people, the value of fika should not be understated. No matter how you choose to embrace fika in your life, I hope you enjoy it!

That’s all for today’s blog, what do you think? Have you heard of the concept of fika before? Does it sound like something that you are going to try and incorporate the concept into your life going forward?

I’d love to hear your thoughts 🙂

Thanks for reading and I hope you have a lovely day!
