One reason I love working in comms…

Good morning 👋

A couple of weeks ago, I was in London for the weekend and found that I had Sunday all to myself.

So, I pulled a classic Sweeney and went to Foyles in Charing Cross – where I got a brilliant reminder of why I love working in communications.

What was that reason exactly? Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to be looking at in today’s blog.

Hello and Welcome to Sweeney’s Blogs!

It should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me or has been following the page for a while that I’m very chatty. I love getting to know people’s stories, their aspirations for life and what’s help shape them into who they are as people.

When I have a day in London all to myself, while it can be a bit strange at first, they always turn out to be lovely days in the end. Usually ending up with a Foyles visiting; however, that’s by no means exclusive to making them what they are 😂

(If you don’t know, Foyles is a book shop with over five floors to choose from)

I spent around 2-3 hours there in the end this time around, chatting to a load of people about books, their stories and what catches their eye. I got to chat about all sorts, from Greek mythology with a guy from Paris to Daniel Kahneman’s books with an Economics student from London, and a whole load of other random conversations.

If you didn’t know, I’m a huge fan of reading.

I’m currently on book 22 of the year – after reading the opening three books of the Red Rising series, The Song of Achilles, by Madeline Miller (I’m a big fan of her books), David and Goliath, by Malcolm Gladwell, and more. I’ve been trying to mix up the genres and writing styles where I can, to keep books fresh and to learn more about how people tell stories from across the globe 🙌

Every book is made up of its own characters, world-building, writing style, pacing and twists to keep you reading. When you get chatting to people about books, you see their faces light up, and you never really know where the convo can take you.

You get to talk to people about what genuinely means something to them, and you see firsthand the impact of good storytelling. It’s how they connect and care about content, and it’s why I’ve loved making content the way I have for the last seven years.

So, whether you’re a fan of fiction or non-fiction, fantasy worlds or personal development masterclasses, biographies or thrillers, there’s a book out there for everyone, don’ you worry.

I decided to treat myself to a little adventure to Flat Iron for some lovely steak in Tottenham Court Road, too. I actually have a whole article about Flat Iron restaurants that I wrote before, that I’ll have to publish soon – we’ll see how everything goes there 👀

I’m going to wrap this blog up here, I reckon. What do you think? Are you a big reader? What’s the last random day out you had that will always stay with you?

As always, I’d love to hear what you think 😊

Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a lovely day!

James
