I’ve probably given away what this blog is going to be about already, haven’t I? 😂
Well… kind of. There’s more to it than that.
It’s not solely about buying a new car – I’d like to instead view it as a little reminder about growing up, taking ownership of things, and celebrating ourselves a little more than most of us ever do.
Hello and Welcome to Sweeney’s Blogs!
If you’re reading this, then yes, I can sadly confirm that after 13 years, the Sweeney mobile is no more. My silver Peugeot 208 was a fantastic little car; however, all good things must come to an end from time to time.
This was the second car I’d ever had, having the car after my dad while I was in University. The first was my little Citroen C3, which my brother and I shared for years; then I had this one for 7/8 years. Anyhow, the car was starting to get too expensive to keep going, so it was time to treat myself to a brand new car…
What did I go for?
Well, you know me, if I’m anything, it’s consistent! I got myself a much newer Peugeot 208 – this time in a much darker grey. I haven’t actually taken any photos of it yet; that’ll be for another day.
You may be reading this thinking – “that’s nice to hear, Sweeney, but what does it have to do with me?” – well, fear not, I’m just getting to that part!
As I mentioned earlier, this is the first time that a car has been fully mine – that I’ve bought with my own money. I’ve worked hard and decided to use the money that I’ve earned to put towards something like this. You’ve likely done a very similar thing countless times as you’ve moved through your life, whether that was consciously or otherwise.
It could be a new car, that holiday you’ve been waiting for, a new pair of shoes, or a coffee on your way to work; ultimately, the actual object or experience doesn’t matter. It’s how it makes you feel. How you appreciate it. That’s what really counts.
Every now and then, life quietly reminds us just how far we’ve come, but we’re often too busy chasing the next thing to notice. So, here’s something I’d love you to try:
The next time you buy something you’ve been patiently waiting for, or something you’ve generally been looking forward to, take a little bit of time. Be present. Don’t immediately think about what’s next. Remind yourself how you got there – you worked for it. You made the decisions that led you to that moment. It’s good to be proud of yourself from time to time – go on, give yourself a bit more love.
Now that I’ve got this new car, who knows how many random adventures it’s going to go on. Weekends away with friends, solo days out, travelling for work – you name it, we’ll do it. Of that much, I’m sure.
