Being a part of a team again

Good morning πŸ‘‹

What’s something unexpected that’s made you feel seen lately?

I’ve started talking about my work and how I see myself and my career a lot more on the page over the last couple of years. I started working with Aidan, one of my closest friends, and the guys at No Boring Brands around six months ago, and something Aidan said lately gave me the idea for today’s post.

Hello and Welcome to Sweeney’s Blogs!

When you haven’t had a stable job for a while, or have gone through a rather tumultuous time career-wise, it’s easy to overthink things from time to time – that’s what I’ve found recently, anyways.

I’ve been working within the Communications industry for the last seven and a half years or so, in roles ranging from student communications to blogging, PR, social media consultancy, humour-based marketing and more. In that time, I’ve had the pleasure of learning so much.

Learning about how we interact as people, the conscious and unconscious ways I communicate, how I can adapt messaging to resonate with people in different ways – the list goes on.

It’s something I’ll always be grateful for: working in this space means that there is literally something new to learn with every single day. A new way of telling a story, an alternative way of viewing a subject, testing out a different style of writing. Being curious in comms is a massive superpower in its own right.

Anyways, I digress. Back to what I wanted to talk about. On the whole, I know the value I can bring to a role.

However, despite this, due to the uncertainty of the last few years, these seeds of doubt can sometimes subconsciously plant themselves and begin sprouting before you even notice. I’ll admit, that’s something that happens to me.

One thing that I made a promise to myself about when starting this new role was to do something about this. It’s worth noting here that I knew it was an area that would be so much better to tackle with some help, so together, Aidan and I have been super honest with each other, and I’ve found that my confidence has been growing back massively since working with the guys.

Why is this happening?

Well, there are a load of different reasons for this, but the one that I wanted to focus on for today is something Aidan said to me lately. Essentially, it was:

“Some brother! Take a breath. We win, and we lose as a team”

That quote sounds like such a simple sentiment, but being part of a team, part of a mission, part of something can make such a big impact. Knowing that you have people to celebrate with when things go well, or brainstorm with when things don’t go to plan, is such a lovely thing to have.

I think that’s something I’ve needed reminding of more than I realised. That I don’t need to have all the answers, that not everything will always go to plan, and that there’s a team of people around me who are all working towards the same goals.

So, if you find yourself questioning your self-worth over the next few weeks, I leave you with this:

Take a breath. Smile. Remember where you started on your journey and where you are today. Remind yourself that whatever it is you’re facing, you can do this. You will do this. You have got this in the bag. Maybe not on the first or second try, but on the third, fourth or fifth try, you’ll get it.

And with that, this blog now comes to a wholesome close. What do you think? Would you like to see more posts like this on the page moving forward? What’s something you had to remind yourself of lately?

I’d love to hear what you think 😊

Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a lovely day!
