Mental Health is something that affects each and every one of us as people. Our Mental Health makes up who we are, who we want to be, and so much more. It is a phenomenally large field, that continues to grow each and every day. Over the last couple of years the spotlight and mainstream media have started to focus in more on the Mental Health and Wellbeing of people and international events, such as World Mental Health Day, which is happening today on the 10th October and so important for our future.
So let’s take a closer look into Mental Health and World Mental Health Day 2020!
Hello and Welcome to Sweeney’s Blogs!
Today, the 10th October 2020 is World Mental Health Day, and it is one of the most important days of the year! Mental Health is a term that affects everybody across the globe. Mental Health is not just something we have when we are feeling a bit stressed, anxious or worried. People do not only have Mental Health when they suffer with Mental Health problems, Mental Health is a constant, it shapes us as people, our past, our present and indeed our future.
When we take a look at Mental Health, what does it really mean?
Our Mental Health is on an ever-evolving spectrum. When we are feeling really happy and positive we have Mental Health, when we are feeling really low and negative, we still have Mental Health. You see Mental Health is not just when we are struggling, it relates to how we work, how we think, the things we like & dislike, our strengths, our weaknesses and so much more; in other words Mental health is what makes people, well people, it’s what makes us human.
Mental Health makes up one of the three foundations of this page and has played a large role in my life. I like to be as open as I can on this page, and in saying that, I have shared a lot about how Mental health has affected me going through my life, as well as this I have written several blogs on what Mental Health really is and how we can learn more about ourselves through our Mental Health.
Let’s take a brief look at some of the Mental Health blogs that I have written:
- Looking into Male Mental Health series – This whole series on my page revolved around the topic of Male Mental Health. I looked at different theories, some of which I made myself, stories, experiences and more to help paint a picture of what Male Mental Health really is and some of the ways that we can help break the stigma surrounding men and their Mental Health. I’ll highlight two of the most personal and Mental Health heavy blogs in that series in the next entry of this list.
- Looking into Male Mental Health – Personal Experience 1 & Personal Experience 2. Personal Experience 1 of my Male Mental Health series looked at bullying, in particular a bully who bullied me for 10 and a half years, and the effects that that can have on your life. This was arguably one of the most personal blogs I have ever written and tells a very real and emotional story.
Personal Experience 2 looks at self-hate cycles, especially one that I made myself, what they are and the impact that it can have on your life.
- Mental Health Can be Everything and Everywhere is a blog that I wrote about Mental Health back in August 2019. I was still relatively new to blogging at this point and when I wrote the blog I was changing my style of writing, but I still do think that there are quite a lot of good points in the blog. The blog is somewhat similar to the guest blog that I write for the Henley Careers blog page ( see below), and takes a look at some of the different ways that Mental Health relates to our lives.
- Sweeney’s Stuttering Story – The Call is a very recent and personal event that happened to me that really impacted on my Mental Health and Wellbeing. It is quite a deep story, but is one that we can take a lot of lessons from.
- What exactly is Mental Health? is a guest blog that I wrote about Mental Health for the Henley Careers blog page. The blog takes a look at Mental Health and the different ways that it can affect us in our life.
There are so many more blogs that I could have added to that list, but I feel like it is in a good position where it is for now so will leave it there. Mental Health is such an important topic and is one that we really do need to open our eyes to. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England estimate that 1 in 4 people suffer from Mental Health issues each year and at any given time, 1 in 6 people have symptoms that are associated with a Mental Health problem. These numbers are very real and if we do not move forward as a society, then they will continue to rise.
World Mental Health day is today, but that doesn’t mean that we should only look at Mental Health today. I have suffered a lot with Mental health problems in the past, it is not something that I am ashamed or embarrassed about, it is something that I choose to embrace. My Mental Health is what makes me, James Sweeney. I continually strive to learn more and more about Mental Health in my life and it has helped me find out so much about, not only myself, but also others and how to best communicate and interact with people.
If you are ever facing any problems to do with your Mental Health, please talk to somebody. You can speak to a family member, a friend, teacher, whoever! Talking to somebody really does make a difference and can really help you to make sense out of what is going on inside your head. Please take today as an incentive to message someone and reach out, you will not regret it!
