An open conversation about male mental health…

Good afternoon,

Hope you’re having a fab day so far 😁

On Monday, I had the pleasure of driving to Cardiff to take part in a fantastic project led by my friend Fin and his business, Proteus Digital. Let’s take a closer look at this project and the difference we’re hoping to make in today’s blog.

Hello and Welcome to Sweeney’s Blogs!

If you’ve known me, or been following the page, for a little while, you’ll know that mental health, and raising awareness around it, has been a topic which has always lain close to my heart. It’s something which impacts us all in some shape or form as we move through life, and we each have a part to play in supporting one another.

When Fin messaged me asking if I’d like to come along and take part in this new project, I knew it was an opportunity that I couldn’t refuse.

Five of us were filmed in around 20-minute interview slots, with questions around the theme of male mental health, tackling the stigma and making the world a better place, one conversation at a time πŸ™

The idea was for us to go in without knowing the questions and to share our honest, raw reactions to how they make us feel.

Some of the questions we had were:

πŸ‘ What do you do if you notice one of your loved ones is struggling?
πŸ‘ What’s stopping men from opening up?
πŸ‘ When was the last time you cried?

Being as open and genuine as this can be scary at first; however, when you consider the impact it can make, it’s beyond worth it πŸ’™

It’s all a part of a new male mental health awareness app, called Mettle, which has been created by a collaboration between Dr Alex George and Bear Grylls. To be asked to be a part of such a project is a huge privilege – one I am very grateful for.

We don’t have these kinds of conversations enough, so let’s collectively make space for these conversations – with ourselves and others. That’s a key point, actually. These things aren’t always about checking in with others; sometimes, it’s reminding yourself to check in with yourself, to see how you’re doing. How are you really doing?

I’ll be sure to share more about this project once the videos are edited and ready to go. Part of me is nervous to see the full video, but I’m sure Fin and the guys will work their magic and will make it as good as it can be.

It was amazing to be able to meet Aled (in the middle) and Fin (on the right) in person, after following their stories on LinkedIn for so longer. Seeing fellow Welsh people, working on projects they love and genuinely making a difference to the world, what’s not to love?!

Although we do look like a Barbershop trio, on the lookout for a new member! If you have questions around why I look like a human tomato in the image below, I’m afraid I don’t have the answers for that – I would say it’s because of the sun, but I do do live in Wales so… 🫣

Here’s to being involved in loads more projects like this going forward, making as much of a difference, and remembering that while we may not have all of the answers in life – we’re all trying to figure things out and make the most of situations wherever we can.

Anyways, that’s all for today’s blog. As mentioned above, I’ll share some more info about the project as soon as I have it! What do you think? Are we creating enough space for these chats? If not, what do you think we can do to change this?

I’d love to hear what you think 😌

Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a lovely day!
