How confident are you? Fairly? Eek…me confident…eh not at at all? Maybe you are confident in your personal life but at work you dread making any decision as you just don’t know if it the right thing to do.
Confidence is a tricky thing, It can take years to build or if you have it, you can lose it quickly if something goes wrong. Are you someone who sits and listens to conversations rather than join in as you lack the confidence? You never voice your opinion or what you know on the subject as you don’t want to be wrong and as you aren’t sure of the facts you don’t want to be laughed at or disregarded.
Perhaps in work, you trained hard to get where you are, but you haven’t brushed up on your knowledge or skills since. You keep doing what you do with the skills or…

It was at a university book sale where I was first introduced to the ideas of Taoism. Hidden away deep in the philosophy section, I picked up what initially seemed like a strange esoteric book – the Tao Te Ching. It was a short text, under 100 pages, that was filled with often puzzling language…

Self Compassion
Self – compassion is giving yourself the same compassion and kindness that you would give a loved one. Charity begins at home, remember! A common stumbling block when thinking about self-compassion is the belief that it just means letting ourselves off the hook. When we say “it’s only human,” isn’t this just a way to blow off personal responsibility for our actions? But let’s look at this more closely. First of all, isn’t it strange that admitting the fact that we’re flawed human beings is perceived as not being honest with ourselves? Isn’t the honest truth that we are only human?

Read moreWhy is Change so Hard?

It comes up in many conversations. We struggle with how things are, and what to do to bring about what we want in life. We ask ourselves “Why is change so hard?”
What a great coaching question. And one I will elaborate here in this re-post.
Three things come to my mind that are supported by scientific research:
- We are hard wired to be in our comfort zone. It’s for human survival … and reinforced by how we deal with difficult emotions growing up. We react to the stressors with a fight, flight, or freeze response, then act out learned behaviors that we think will take away the discomfort and fear. Those behaviors often keep us stuck and in a cycle of disappointment and feeling like a failure.
- In some circumstances we may fail to see change happening already around us. Our own conditioning…
