Sweeney’s Stuttering Update – March 2021

Over the past year, I have gone on a very unusual journey with my speech and my Stutter. The past 12 months have seen a lot of ups and downs, and I have learned a lot about my Stutter, and the role that it plays in my life. While I usually keep these observations to myself, I have been thinking that they could make for the odd interesting ‘update’ post, and that’s exactly what we’ll be looking at today!

Let’s take a look at some of the thoughts I have, and things I have learned, about my Stutter in March 2021!

ABC’s of Active Listening: What Are They And How Can We Use Them?

Anxiety Bear

Have you ever been having a conversation with someone about something you considered important, and you could just tell that they weren’t paying attention/interested? I’m sure we’ve all experienced this at some point or another in our lives, and it can leave us feeling ignored, invalid and invisible.

I for one have experienced this many times throughout my life, and it is never something I seek to experience again. These encounters have left me with a personal motivation to try and treat others how I would like to be treated. For those of you who are new to this blog, I am studying to become a counsellor, and it was actually a recent lesson that inspired this post. During this lesson I realised just how important active listening skills were to me achieving my aforementioned goal, and believe they would be an asset to anyone who finds themselves pondering the…

Today is Going to be a Good Day!!

I woke up today in an absolutely amazing mood. I had a very late lie-in today, and as soon as I opened my curtains, all I could see was blue sky and the sun shining down. We don’t see sunny weather all that often in the Swansea Valley’s, and as it has been so bitterly cold recently, it was a very welcome surprise for me today.

The way that something so simple like the weather can have such a positive change on your mood never ceases to amaze me. I find that when the sun is out, I am naturally a lot happier, more energetic and more productive. So with all that being said, I know that today is going to be a good day!

The 3 A’s of Coping: How to Deal with Change and Grow From It – Anxiety Bear

Anxiety Bear

“Know what’s weird? Day by day nothing seems to change, but pretty soon, everything is different.”

– Bill Watterson

You and I both know that change is a constant and inevitable thing in life. That being said, it doesn’t make it any less difficult at times. Whether it’s small day to day changes or more intense events such as bereavement, I imagine it would be impossible to find someone who hasn’t been upset or frustrated when things go differently than planned or ‘how they used to’. This is especially difficult if you struggle from a mental health condition such as depression, anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

The thing is, whilst change is unavoidable and can be very irritating, there are ways we can cope and grow from it. Before we get to this though, I would like to discuss with you the most common forms of change and how they…
